Short Story
Tin-tin and its Engineer
Created by: Hannani binti Fakharuzzaman
There was once an engineer who loved to build. He was a smart and
clever man that had created many inventions throughout his life. Day and night,
he would work hard in his workshop all by himself. However, the engineer
felt lonely and wanted to have company. So, he decided to build a robot. So, he
started gathering the materials and began his work. It took him a few weeks to
assemble but soon it was finished.
“Finally, I’ve completed my robot!” he yelled joyfully while
jumping with joy. The robot was made of metal and had gears in its chest. It
also has big round light bulbs for eyes and metal claws for its hands. The
engineer checked closely at the robot’s features to make sure that they are all
functioning correctly. “Now, let’s see if it works.” The engineer flicked a
switch at the back of the robot. The sounds of gears turning were heard and
lights flickering as the robot began to raise its head. “Beep-beep-boop.
Greetings, mister.” There were speakers at the mouth of the robot which greeted
the engineer with a monotone voice. “Hello my fellow robot friend. I’m the one
that created you.” the engineer explained. “I see. I am very grateful. Thank
you.” the robot replied. The
engineer was fascinated by its behaviour.
“I should give you a name. Something simple and easy
to remember.” He examined the robot again and said, “Your name will be Tin-tin
from now on.” He said with a smile. The robot nodded in agreement.
The next day, it was early in the morning and Tin-tin walked around the workshop, curious
with many things. The robot didn't know a lot of things but was eager to learn.
Everything that it sees, it would always ask the engineer what it was and what
its for.
“Mister, what is this?” Tin-tin asked. “That is a book,
Tin-tin. The book is blue and has many pages.” “What is it used for, Mister?”
“You can read it and gain more knowledge, Tin-tin." The robot opened the
book but was confused with the contents inside. “Mister, what does this
book say?” The engineer gave a puzzled look “Can’t you read, Tin-tin?” The
robot shook its head. “Well then, I’ll try teaching you how to read
soon.”
After that, the robot found another object. “Mister, what is
that?” “Oh, that’s a broom Tin-tin. You use it to sweep the floor and get rid
of dust and rubbish.” Tin-tin tried sweeping the floor but was holding it
backwards. “That’s not how you sweep the floor, Tin-tin. Here, I’ll show you.”
The engineer showed it how to hold the broom correctly. Tin-tin learned quickly
and was able to use the broom correctly.
The sun was setting. Tin-tin was helping the engineer organize his
tools. “Tin-tin, can you pass me the screwdriver?” Tin-tin didn’t know what a
screwdriver was. So it picked up a tool and asked, “Is this the screwdriver?”
The engineer shook his head, “No, that’s a hammer. A hammer has a big metal
head that is used to hammer in nails.” The engineer explained while also
holding a small nail with his fingers. “The screwdriver is at that table. It
has a yellow handle and has a long, metal rod.” Tin-tin nodded and walked there
to get the correct tool. “Next, we need to get the saw.” “What does it look
like, Mister?” “It has a sharp blade and has a brown handle. Be careful though,
the sharp blade can hurt you.” Tin-tin was frightened by it but found the saw
nonetheless. The engineer laughed, “Don’t worry Tin-tin. You’re made of metal
so the saw will not even damage you. However, be careful not to point at other
people." “I understand, mister. Thank you.” Tin-tin gave a sigh of
relief.
It has turned nighttime.
The engineer felt tired and was ready to go home. “Thank you so much for
helping me with the tools, Tin-tin.” “You’re welcome, mister. It was very
interesting to learn about all the tools in the workshop.” Tin-tin’s
robotic arms swung around from excitement. It really enjoyed being able to
understand the things around the workshop. “I want to learn more about this
world, mister. There are so many interesting things to see.” Tin-tin exclaims. The engineer thought for a moment, then assured, “Tomorrow, I have a job that I need to do. You can come with me and we’ll
discover so much more things, Tin-tin.” “Hooray! Thank you, mister.” Tin-tin’s
gears started spinning with excitement. The engineer laughed at its amusement.
“See you tomorrow, Tin-tin.” The engineer switched off Tin-tin and stored it
safely. He smiled to himself, “I’m happy that I made you, Tin-tin.”

My disappearing Swamp
Created by: Hannani binti Fakharuzzaman
Oh fireflies,
Flying in the darkest
swamp.
They fly high, no reason why,
But suddenly they’ve
stopped.
Oh toads,
Croaking along to a
melody,
Then came the cars and
roads,
Ruining all the purity.
Oh beavers
Once swam peacefully in
the streams
But now they have
collars
Now captured, leaving silent
screams.
The swamp is gone,
Without a trace,
No signs of life,
They’re all erased.
Our Trip to Thailand
Created by: Hannani binti Fakharuzzaman
My family and I went to visit Bangkok Thailand
for the first time ever during the holidays. My mother had been planning this
trip for years now and was ecstatic to be finally able to go. During the night
before, the family has packed up our clothes, passports and other necessities;
enough for 4 days. We drove to the airport early in the morning; all of us were
very tired when we arrived. Thankfully, there were not many issues we faced and
we boarded our flight with no hassle. A couple of hours later, we arrived at
the Suvarbhanumi Airport, also known as the Bangkok Airport around noon. We
rent a car and drove straight to a nearby hotel called Matchbox Bangkok Hostel.
We unpacked our belongings neatly and decided to explore tomorrow.
The
next day, we drove to several other places such as the Grand Palace, the
National Museum & Wang Na Palace as well as the Chatuchak Market. At the
palace, we were amazed by how the palace was built and the colors as well. We
took many pictures posing in front of it. It was very crowded though so we didn’t
get to stay long.
The
food there was to die for. So many traditional Thailand foods were served in
the restaurants we went to. The dishes had a mixture of savoury, spicy and also
sweet like tom yum, Thailand noodles and Thai chicken satay.
The
last day we bought several souvenirs for ourselves, relatives and friends like
shirts, magnets, key chains and a sun hat. We refrained from buying food
because it might get ruined during the flight. In the final day, we were able
to return home safely. It was a memorable trip and an amazing family-bonding
experience.
